Database lost over 860 cards from my trainer

Today we received an error notice regarding my wifes cloud data base stating her sets had become unavailable or corrupted. This is six months work lost. My first question is to the developer: is there any way to recover this lost work? Second: how do I back up to my laptop in the future? A very unhappy day.
